The Office of the Provost provides the resources and infrastructure that empower Northwestern's community of scholars to pursue their greatest scholarly ambitions.

Provost Erik Luijten

As Northwestern's chief academic officer, Provost Luijten works with deans, directors and administrative units to set academic priorities and policies and coordinate initiatives to support graduate and undergraduate education, faculty appointments and promotion, and space and resource planning. He also has primary responsibility for preparing Northwestern’s annual budget.

Provost Luijten is the Liu-Wang Liming Professor of Materials Science and Engineering. He also holds courtesy appointments in Engineering Sciences and Applied Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy, and Chemistry.

Important information for submitting Fall 2026 course material requests (deadline Sept. 9)

Faculty can now submit course materials requests for Fall 2026 through the My Materials link in Canvas. Read this post for guidance on utilizing Northwestern Bookstore's new course materials adoptions tool. Faculty who have not yet submitted course material requests for the Fall 2026 term are encouraged to do so by Sept. 9.

William Reno named interim director of the Program of African Studies

Political Science Professor and Department Chair William Reno has been appointed interim director of Northwestern’s Program of African Studies, effective Sept. 1. Currently classified as one of Northwestern’s University Research Institutes and Centers (URIC) in the Office for Research, the program will move to the Office of the Provost as the University works to re-energize the program. A search for the next director will commence soon.
